regardingの意味・使い方｜about・concerning・with regard toとの違い

regardingは「特定の話題に意識を向けて、〜に関して」と示す前置詞です。日常会話のaboutよりやや改まっており、ビジネスメール、案内、報告、会議などでよく使われます。

日本語では「〜について」「〜に関して」と訳されます。意味だけならaboutに近いものの、regardingには今から扱うテーマを明確に指定する事務的・丁寧な響きがあります。

regardingは、会話で無理に使う必要はありません。仕事のメールや少し改まった場面で「この件についてです」と話題をきれいに指定したいときに便利です！

regardingのコアイメージは「特定の話題に関して」

regardingは動詞regardの-ing形から発達した語です。regardには「見る・考える・みなす」という感覚があり、regardingはある対象へ視線や考えを向けながら、その話題との関係を示します。

about・regarding・concerningの違い

aboutは最も幅広く、会話では通常これで十分です。regardingは、メールの用件や業務上のテーマを明確にするときに自然です。concerningも「〜に関して」ですが、規則・報告・正式な通知などで、さらに硬く聞こえることがあります。

regardingとwith regard toの違い

regarding Aとwith regard to Aは、どちらも「Aに関して」です。意味の差は小さく、with regard toのほうが語数が多い分、やや改まって聞こえます。

• Regarding your request, we need more information.
  ご依頼について、追加情報が必要です。
• With regard to your request, we need more information.
  ご依頼に関しまして、追加情報が必要です。

ここでのregardは単数形です。with regards toと複数形にする誤りがよくあります。メール末尾のBest regardsでは複数形ですが、前置詞句はwith regard toです。

regardingの位置｜文頭と文中の使い方

文頭：話題を切り替える

• Regarding the budget, we need to make a decision today.
  予算についてですが、今日中に決定する必要があります。
• Regarding your question, the answer is yes.
  ご質問についてですが、答えは「はい」です。

文頭では「この件について話します」と、テーマを先に示します。後ろにコンマを置くのが一般的です。

文中：名詞や行動と話題を結ぶ

• I’m calling regarding your reservation.
  ご予約についてお電話しています。
• We have an update regarding the delivery date.
  配送日に関する最新情報があります。
• Please contact me regarding this issue.
  この問題について私にご連絡ください。

文中ではcall・write・contact・question・update・informationなどと、扱う話題を結びます。

regardingの後ろに何を置く？

regardingは前置詞なので、後ろに動詞を置くなら-ing形にします。

regardingとas regardsの違い

as regards Aも「Aに関して」を表すやや硬い表現です。この表現ではregardsと-sが付きます。

  費用については、さらに話し合う必要があります。

メールでregardingを使いすぎない

regardingは便利ですが、同じメール内で何度も使うと事務的で重くなります。二度目以降はabout、on、this issue、the matterなどへ言い換えられます。

• I’m writing regarding the meeting. I have two questions about the agenda.
• Thank you for contacting us about this matter.

冒頭でregardingを使って用件を明確にし、その後は自然な表現へ切り替えると読みやすくなります。

regardingのよくある間違い

regarding toとする

regarding自体が前置詞なので、後ろにtoは不要です。

Regarding aboutと重ねる

regardingとaboutは同じ話題関係を示すため、通常は一緒に使いません。

日常会話で必要以上に硬くする

友人同士ならWhat do you think about the movie?が自然です。regarding the movieでも文法的には作れますが、日常会話では硬く聞こえます。
