比較表現の書き換え｜原級・比較級・最上級をNo other・than any otherで例文解説

英語の比較表現は、原級・比較級・最上級の間で書き換えられます。形は変わっても、表している順位関係や事実は同じです。

Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
＝Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.
＝No other mountain in Japan is as high as Mt. Fuji.

書き換えは別の意味を作る作業ではありません。同じ順位表を、1位から見るか、2位以下から見るか、同じ高さに届かない側から見るかの違いです。

比較表現の書き換え一覧｜基本の3パターン

最上級から比較級へ｜than any otherを使う

最上級で1位にいるAは、同じ範囲にいるほかのどの一つよりも上です。そのため、the＋最上級を比較級＋than any other＋単数名詞へ書き換えられます。

Tom is the tallest boy in his class.
＝Tom is taller than any other boy in his class.

This river is the longest river in the country.
＝This river is longer than any other river in the country.

otherを忘れないことが重要です。Tom自身もクラスの男子なので、than any boyでは自分自身との比較を含んでしまいます。また、any otherは「ほかのどの一人・一つ」と個別に比べるため、後ろは原則として単数名詞です。

最上級から原級へ｜No other … as … as

Aが1位であることは、「Aと同じ目盛りまで届くほかの対象がない」とも表せます。

Tom is the tallest boy in his class.
＝No other boy in his class is as tall as Tom.

This is the most useful tool here.
＝No other tool here is as useful as this one.

No other＋単数名詞が主語になり、「ほかのどの一つも〜ない」と範囲を一つずつ閉じます。原級部分は比較級や最上級に変えず、as＋原級＋asにします。

比較級から原級へ｜not as … asで向きを反転する

AがBより高いなら、BはAほど高くありません。主語と比較対象を入れ替え、比較級をnot as＋原級＋asへ変えます。

Tom is taller than Ken.
＝Ken is not as tall as Tom.

This route is safer than that one.
＝That route is not as safe as this one.

単語だけを置き換えるのではなく、高い側と低い側が入れ替わる点に注意してください。not so … asも同じ意味で使われますが、一般的な会話ではnot as … asが自然です。

one of the 最上級の書き換え｜ほとんどすべてより上

one of the bestは最上位グループの一つであり、必ずしも単独1位ではありません。そのため、better than any otherでは強すぎます。書き換えるなら、better than most otherを使います。

Kyoto is one of the oldest cities in Japan.
＝Kyoto is older than most other cities in Japan.

She is one of the most experienced members.
＝She is more experienced than most other members.

any otherは「ほかのすべて」を上回る単独1位、most otherは「ほとんどすべて」を上回る最上位グループです。最上級の慣用表現でも詳しく説明しています。

Nothing・Nobodyを使う書き換え

物ならNothing、人ならNobody / No oneを主語にして、同じ最上級の内容を表せます。

This experience was the most valuable to me.
＝Nothing was more valuable than this experience.

Mai is the fastest runner on the team.
＝Nobody on the team runs faster than Mai.

Nothing is as valuable as …のように原級でも表せます。ただし、元の文が比べている範囲を、書き換え後にも残してください。範囲を落とすと「チーム内で一番」が「世界で一番」のように意味を広げてしまいます。

2つだけを比べるときは最上級にしない

比較対象が2つの場合、学校文法では比較級を使います。

Tom is the taller of the two.
トムは2人のうち背が高い方です。

Which is better, this one or that one?
こちらとあちらでは、どちらがよいですか。

the tallerのtheは最上級の印ではありません。「2つのうち高い方」と対象を特定しています。3つ以上の範囲ならthe tallest of the threeです。

比較表現を書き換える手順

1. 比較範囲を囲う：クラス内、日本国内、3案の中など
2. 順位関係を確認する：単独1位か、最上位の一つか、二者比較か
3. 視点を選ぶ：1位を指す／他を一つずつ超える／同じ位置に届かない
4. 主語と比較対象、単数・複数、otherを調整する

よくある書き換えミス

• × higher than any mountain → ○ higher than any other mountain
• × any other mountains → ○ any other mountain
• × No other mountain is as higher as → ○ as high as
• one of the bestをbetter than any otherへ強めない
• 書き換え前後で比較範囲を変えない
• 比較する形・種類をそろえる
